CAMVETS Maker Spotlight: BasicRespirator
BasicRespirator is Making Masks that Actually Fit!
Hunter Futo participated in our COVID-19 Maker Challenge, an ad hoc spinoff of our Challenge America Makers For Veterans (CAMVETS) program to address the arising needs of frontline workers during the pandemic. Hunter and her team worked with first responders to design a respirator mask that would be less intimidating for the often frightening situations they are responding to. Their mask design won the iEX Design Award and she went on to present the product during the VHA Innovation Experience Conference. Since the competition, she has turned her success into a startup for customized respirator mask designs.
We caught up with Hunter to hear about her experience with the Maker Challenge and what she's been up to since.
How did the idea for the product come about?
Our team was paired with a first responder that worked in law enforcement. We interviewed him and asked a lot of questions about their day-to-day routines and what happened when they responded to a call with a potentially infected patient. This helped me to understand the needs of both the first responder and the patient. The final design was less intimidating for patients and a magnetic fastener enabled safe and easy removal of the mask. I selected the materials based on similar materials used in tactical gear and they worked really well.
How would you describe the experience with the COVID-19 Maker Challenge?
I loved the experience and would do it again. The best part was being paired with a real user and solving an actual problem. I approached the design with an empathetic mindset and helped me to think of solutions I never would have thought of on my own.
What is the current status of the project and what are the next steps/phases?
I have formed a startup and am raising funding to make this product a reality. We've received a couple of research grants so far and have done some preliminary lab testing to ensure it could meet certification requirements. I've also tested it with users and now we are moving into a pilot program to test the devices on site and capture feedback. I've discovered that respirator fitting is a big problem in the industry so we are working on solutions for that. We have an augmented reality mobile app in development too!
