Local artists honored for giving their time and talent to support Veterans

Challenge America announce the winners of its latest guitar decoration competition during a special exhibit of decorated guitars at the Red Brick Center for the Arts in downtown Aspen, Colorado. This project offers local artists the opportunity to decorate the guitars that Challenge America provides to the Veterans in its music therapy programs. Guitars for this project were provided by The Heartstrings Foundation and generous artists at Tandy Leather donated hand-tooled guitar straps that complement the guitar designs.

This winners of our Spring 2022 guitar decoration project are Katia Palma (pictured above), Britany Cocina, and Joel Castenada. All winning guitars will remain on display at the Red Brick Center for the Arts through May 13. After this exhibit, the winning guitars will be sent to the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago, where they will be displayed for the summer months. Following this exhibit, the guitars will be made available for selection by the participants in our national music therapy program.

Makers for Veterans 2021 started on a high note with the final event in a year-long collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs to develop innovative solutions to the most urgent non-clinical challenges facing essential workers on the frontlines of COVID-19. This project produced 50 new products, including a low-cost telehealth case developed by Team HermTac, a portable physical therapy system developed by Team Wareology, and an exciting new wellness monitoring system developed by Team Okaya. These solutions and others keep our frontline workers safe while improving their ability to meet the needs of our most vulnerable friends and neighbors. In recognition of our efforts, the Small Business Administration awarded Challenge America the Lab-to-Market Ecosystem Responder Prize.
