What was your first inspiration to start doing art?
I began photography as a way to capture beautiful scenery and combat anxiety, depression and PTSD. I realized I really enjoyed it and got better as the years went on. The first location I bought an expensive camera in was Alaska.

Do you have a process or ritual to get your creative juices flowing?

When I am taking a picture I try to get to the location early to scout it out. Taking your time is key when composing a shot. I also ensure that I take more pictures than necessary and go back and look through which ones may be keepers. For location, I try to shoot during golden hour which is at sunset. If it is a night shot, I try to go where there can be streaking lights from a moving object.

Has there ever been a time that being an artist helped you pull through difficulties?

Being an artist has helped me through consistent issues with anxiety, depression and PTSD. It has been another form of therapy to help me heal. It has also given me sovereignty, a story and a full business. I couldn't be more grateful.

One of the most important and influential actions we can take in life is to celebrate the art and creativity of others. In our Veteran Art Community, CAVARTS, there is no shortage of inspiring art to celebrate, from writing to sculpting, from theater to crocheting, and everything in between. The many experiences that are unique to Veterans and the particular difficulties they have endured often shine through their works.

CAVART’s goal is to build a national community of Veteran artists from all walks of life and all disciplines, who come together to learn from one another, connect and collaborate on projects, and grow and heal from their experiences. We have taken the initiative to showcase the works of our brave men and women artists through the CAVARTS Artist Spotlight.

We invite all of our members, who feel comfortable to share, to submit their works to us. If you’re interested to learn more about how to submit a piece or to join CAVARTS please visit
