For hotels and other facilities, there is concern about staff, guests and their belongings carrying contaminants as they enter a facility. Some sort of sanitation station for the front and back of house to clean shoes, luggage, etc. could prevent contamination and transmission.
Cleaning tasks have become more extensive and time-consuming for staff in hospitals, hotels, etc, yet these facilities find themselves more short-staffed than ever. One way to improve efficiency would be to have access to real-time information on which spaces are experiencing high traffic and are in greatest need of sanitation.
As the most frequently touched surfaces, door knobs, elevator buttons, and light switches can be hotspots for contaminants. A cost-effective solution to avoid touching these objects directly would have a huge impact.
Hotels, hospitals, and other facilities are in need of a system to prove to customers and patients that their spaces are clean and safe. The ability to identify contaminated surfaces and objects would be of tremendous value.
There is a need for a solution to disinfect equipment between hospital and hotel rooms so that contaminants are not being transferred between rooms. As supplies are more scarce, it is important to find ways to reuse pieces of equipment without transmitting the virus.
Cleaning high traffic areas on patient wards requires frequent and detailed cleaning, but most locations do not enough personnel to support the extra custodial efforts. Examples of high traffic areas include surfaces like doorknobs, handrails, nursing stations, bathrooms, walls, waiting areas, etc.
Bus drivers need a quick yet efficient way to decontaminate/sterilize buses transporting patients to/from the the hospital. Currently, drivers are wiping down the seats between runs and encouraging use of hand sanitizer by patients, but this is time-consuming and not as thorough as it ideally should be.
Cleaning tasks have become more extensive and time-consuming for staff in hospitals, hotels, etc, yet these facilities find themselves more short-staffed than ever. It would improve the efficiency and comprehensiveness of this critical sanitation work to have a way to better track the spaces that have been cleaned and those that have not throughout the workday.
Rebranded as Team HermTac, this solution earned top marks as the winner of the iEx Design Award. This innovative solution uses concentrated UVC lighting to create a Tessellation Sanitation Station, capable of sanitizing luggage and other objects in just seconds.
Rebranded as Team Rona Busters, the team developed a traffic monitoring system complete with a mobile dashboard allowing real-time traffic reports as well as cleaning reports by zone.
Rebranded as Team Can't Touch This, this solution features a retractable door opening and touchpoint device that includes a sanitization process each time it retracts.
Team Virus Detection developed a Raman Light Inspection System to quickly detect COVID-19 on surfaces. This portable system accurately distinguishes viruses instantaneously.
The team designed an automated system for decontaminating surfaces in hotel rooms, to include the surfaces of cleaning carts commonly used for housekeeping tasks.
After discussing the challenge with in depth, the team pivoted to focus its energy on developing training materials for housekeeping staff. Their student-centered design incudes online quizzes and discussion prompts
The team built on its experience in the first challenge to develop a UVC decontamination system capable of sanitizing busses of varying sizes, The system deploys fron the bus ceiling to maximize light exposure to all surfaces.
Rebranded as Team Off The Rails, the team developed an automated railing decontamination system, complete with articulating arms and safety features that prioritize human railing use over cleaning tasks.
